I thought that the two most annoying Microsoft related events where:
– Restarting after every Windows update, which apparently happens every two days or so
– Getting a bazillion emails from Microsoft for everything, which qualifies Microsoft as a huge spammer.

But I guess we have a new winner. I received the email today, which I copy-pasted below. Apparently someone at Microsoft thought it was a brilliant idea to annoy users by restarting their machine every two hours without saving their work so that they will upgrade.

I can only imagine this meeting…. I bet they laughed so hard about how their users will get the point when the computer reboots, so they will feel compelled to upgrade the RC for Windows 7. But haven’t they stopped for a minute to think that this will be a completely frustrating experience which will just get users to start hating Windows 7 like they did with Windows Vista?

Come on Microsoft! Think of a better way. Something more user friendly, find a way to motivate people! Make them feel excited about Windows 7 so they upgrade. But don’t do something as stupid as this!

The Windows 7 RC will fully expire on June 1, 2010. Your PC running the Windows 7 RC will continue shutting down every two hours and your files won’t be saved during shutdown. In addition, your wallpaper will change to a solid black background with a persistent message on your desktop. You’ll also get periodic notifications that Windows isn’t genuine. That means your PC may no longer be able to obtain optional updates or downloads requiring genuine Windows validation.

To avoid interruption, please reinstall a prior version of Windows or move to Windows 7. In either case, you’ll need to do a custom (clean) install to replace the RC. As with any clean installation, you’ll need to back up your data then reinstall your applications and restore the data. This guy summarizes some of the thoughts I’ve had in regards of how we humans have a weird way of making choices because of the “comparison factor”. What do I mean?

We make choices that most of the time don’t make sense because we always compare to something else that maybe doesn’t make sense in the first place. And business know that and they use it to their advance. Human behavior is complicated.

No se me ocurre ninguna otra forma de hacer mas enfasis en la cochinada de institucion que es el ICE.

Todos los costarricenses sabemos que hacer cualquier tramite en el ICE es perder una mannana o una tarde. Son lo mas ineficiente que hay.

Me ha pasado de todo, desde pedir internet y dicen “diay no hay puertos”, hacer filas interminables y cualquier tramite uno practicamente tiene que ir a rogarles para que le den a uno un servicio. Por cosas como esas es que estamos como estamos.

En Europa o Estados uno consigue una linea en minutos, aca lloran y le hacen a uno la vida imposible por cualquier cosa.

Acabo de ir y no me dieron una linea por que GSM hasta febrero empiezan a dar las listas de a quien se la van a dar. Y con 3G tampoco pues mi aparato no es el apropiado, que con factura que bla bla bla. Solo ponen trabas al crecimiento del pais!

A ELLOS QUE LES IMPORTA!!!!!!!!!!! Que se dediquen a dar buenos servicios y punto, para eso estan.

Y por cierto, quien hizo el website del ice? No se puede encontrar nada, las imagenes no son linkeables, dead links por todo lado…

Hasta dan ganas de llorar…..

I received today my nice little participation thingy for presenting @ the Microsoft SharePoint Conference 2009. I was part of the search tracks, and got very good reviews!

I’m happy to know all the good things one can accomplish when working with the right people. After being stuck for 3 years of my life with the wrong people(actually person), things look a lot better now.

That’s my advice to everyone, life gets better if you look for better opportunities. Don’t waste your time on dead end companies just because of “stability”

Tengo que aceptarlo, me gusto tanto la pelicula Avatar que la fui a ver dos veces, pero solo lo disfrute una vez. Dejenme explicar la razon….

La primera vez que la vi fui a Terramall VIP a verla, una experiencia increible. La segunda vez la fui a ver al IMAX Nova de Repretel en Avenida Escazu. GRAVE ERROR!!!!!.

Tengo que aceptarlo, iba emocionado a ver la pelicula en el IMAX, por que si uds viven en el mismo pais que yo, han oido de toda la publicidad del IMAX: “la pantalla mas grande de este universo!” y otro poco de tonteras pero al fin de cuentas esto es lo que pienso del IMAX:
– Es solo un cine con una pantalla un poco mas grande que lo normal
– Las filas es algo nunca antes visto. El IMAX se convirtio en el paseito de muchas personas que probablemente si no fuera por eso nunca irian a Escazu (me incluyo, ya que quitaron Sambuka jajajaja)
– Como buenos ticos, mientras hacia la fila habia familias tomandose fotos por que estaban en “Avenida Escazu” y querian ensennarle a sus familias donde fueron y lo que vieron (hablo de las tiendas adolfo dominguez, massimo duty, apple y otras que uno tiene que vender el carro para poder comprarse una “mudada”. Tambien menciono que como buenos ticos, los veia zampando sanguches, latas y otras cosas en carteras y bolsillos pa meterlos al cine por que las palomitas estan bien caras.
– Los asientos son estupi@#$#@$ incomodos, si pague 5 rojos minimo quiero un asientito comodo y que no suene “YYYYY YYYYYYY YYYYYYYYY” cada vez que me muevo
– Las filas… de nuevo las filas….

En fin, no se dejen llevar por la publicidad. El imax es solo un cine como cualquier otro, mucho hype, una pantallilla un poco mas grande y ya.

Haganse un favor y vayan a Terramall VIP si se quieren chinear. Eso SI vale la pena.

Y pa que vean que no miento… de ahi sigue como 100 metros la fila

I delivered an seo optimization project a few days ago and one of the issues that needed to be fixed was the canonical redirection issue. For those of you who don’t know exactly what it is (but probably are here because you want to implement a fix for it), let me explain.

– You have a site, i.e. www.xaviermorera.com
– You have a page: www.xaviermorera.com/mypage.html
– If you type xaviermorera.com/mypage.html, the page still displays but the “www” is not added

That is canonical redirection, both urls work and the “www” is not added. So why it is a problem? Because Google or other search engines think it is actually two pages instead of one. Which it is funny because you have canonical redirection on one end and page canibalization on the other!

So, how to solve?
– One (expensive) option is to install an isapi filter on your IIS
– Or have a dedicated host and configure via the IIS manager

But none of them work in a shared host!

So, here is the solution you’ve been waiting for: (this post is specific for ASP NET)

In the Application_BeginRequest in your global.asax, just type a code to look for the “www”, and if it is missing simply add it. The following code will do the trick:

The other day I almost went crazy because I downloaded an application from Itunes Appstore and couldn’t transfer my applications to my Iphone 2G (as much as I want to have an Iphone 3G, I will wait until this one dies).

After some time of troubleshooting, googling, authorize computer on the itunes, and many other steps, I was able to find out what the problem was.

I needed to remove the restrictions on my iphone. To do that go to Settings > General > Restrictions and set them to off.

I have no idea why they were set to on, but that did the trick.

Dado que me mande a pedir unas varas que me sugirió Rolo para aislar el ruido de mi carro, me decidí a medir el ruido dentro del carro. Esto dado que no puedo ni hablar por telefono con mi esposa mientras manejo y ya me duelen los oidos de empujarme los audifonos hacia adentro para poder apenas oirla.

Para tal efecto, compre una aplicacion para el iphone que se encarga de medir el nivel de decibeles en el ambiente. Tuve que pagar $1.99 y pelearme con el hecho que mi iphone no queria sincronizar aplicaciones (lo cual ya se como arreglar – en otro post lo explico). En fin, el app store e itunes a veces no son tan faciles de usar como a uno le gustaria o uno es demasiado chapa! jejeje Por cierto, comprar la aplicación también fue idea de mi hermanito Rolo.

Acá esta lo que encontré

Cuando uno prende el carro tiene un pequenno brinco que pasa los 100 decibeles, que es el aceleronazo al prenderlo. De ahi en ralenti (idle) se estabiliza en aproximadamente 80 db. En el grafico luego se muestra como acelero un par de veces llegando alrededor de 94db

Y ahora la ultima se ve donde viene el land rover en una recta, compresiono y llega hasta el punto de estar frenado.

Cual es la conclusion?
Aproximadamente 80 db en ralenti (idle), de 90 db a 95 db en calle en linea recta (ojo que no en pista) y ya compresionando o muy acelerado llega hasta 105 db.

O sea, mi land rover es poco mas que una perforadora pero no tanto como un concierto!!!!!!!

Y aca esta la medicion en el carro de mi esposa. Un sedan y tiene como promedio 66 decibeles. Creo que por eso quiero un sedan! Para poder oirme pensar. Queria un Hyundai i10, que estan chivisimas pero no se….

Hace varios meses descubri un error en el sistema bancario del BAC San Jose. Les mande un correo haciendoles notar el error pero me ignoraron (para variar – de fijo ya me tienen marcado como cliente “dificil”). No voy a extender mucho el cuento, asi que se los voy a describir rapidamente

1. Entren a su pagina del BAC San Jose en www.bac.net
2. Metanse a su consulta de saldos de la tarjeta. Pero no a la de pagar, si no a la de donde salen todas sus compras. Ahi hay un cuadrito para pagar, seleccionen ahi para escribir el monto en dolares.

Luego escriban el monto de dolares que quieren pagar y le dan click al boton de pagar. A continuacion ven la parte divertida. Se equivocan a la hora de hacer el pago, pues en vez de pagar en dolares toman en cuenta el total como si fueran colones. Es decir, queria pagar 1257 dolares y el banco los toma como si fueran 1257 colones.

Hay otra forma de pagar bien y es entrar directo a la pagina de pago de tarjeta. Pero ese no es el punto. El punto mio es que que miedo si hacen errores como este, que otros errores de calculos tendran en el sistema? Sera que perdemos plata por errores de este tipo?

No quiero ser paranoico, pero cuantos de nosotros calculamos con exactitud lo que gastamos y cerramos cuentas? Cuantos habremos perdido platilla en errores asi?
