Please fire the person in Microsoft that thought the charms thing is ok

by Xavier Comments: 0

I have a quick test that the person that thought of, designed or approved the charms should take.

Test: make them sit down in a computer, open terminal server and get into a Windows Server 2012 machine. Now ask them to try to show the charms bar instantly with the mouse 10 out of 10 times. It is not possible or you would have to be a ninja to do it consistently. If they fail, fire them! (Did Ballmer take the test?)

Most people are not ninjas therefore it is not a nice user experience. Start button was way better. People need immediate reaction for an action, not guessing which one is the exact pixel to stand on top of. Make it simple, have a reaction for an action. Make a little triangle in the corner to fire it up. (You can also fix the screen with the apps but that is a separate topic)

Make this the action that as a reaction

Make this the action that as a reaction

Nonsense…

Add a little button to show the charms bar!

The problem with printers! And how to solve it

by Xavier Comments: 0

Printers are the work of the devil indeed. There are several problems:
– They are cheap but ink is a billion times more expensive than Caviar
– They are complicated to use, require obscure drivers and come with mega bloated useless software
– And the worst one IMHO, there are trillions of models. Just look at the list below for Canon. It is impossible to even memorize 1/100 of this list.

You want to become a billionaire and create a business that thrives and kills all competition? Create a printer company that:
– Has 3 models: personal, pro and business. Personal is only printer, pro scans and copies and business is the same as pro but faster and more resilient.
– Very simple driver. Allows to print with very little complexity and even has a dropbox where you put a word, excel, pdf or image and it is printed right away. A bit of security in the business one but that’s it.
– And the price can be a bit higher, but decent priced replacement cartdriges. You can claim it is a green company as there is less waste. Maybe even replace only a small tube within the cartdrige.

You would create a killer company that will bring Canon, HP, Epson and the rest down in flames!

Really… How many of the printers below you can memorize? It is insane, overly complex, stupid and doesn’t make any sense!

Printers[edit]

Canon printers are supplied with Canon Advanced Printing Technology (CAPT), a printer driver software-stack developed by Canon. The company claims that its use of data compression reduces their printer’s memory requirement, compared to conventional laser printers, and also claim that it increases the data transfer rate when printing high-resolution graphics.[3]

In Japan, the models are denoted with a trailing “i”, whereas in the rest of the world they are denoted with a leading “i”. While the 50i corresponds to the i70, for all other corresponding models the numerical model numbers are identical. The “X” denotes models sold under special dispensation by retail outles in Europe.

PIXMA series[edit]
Since about 2005 Canon introduced a numbering scheme for some whereby the least significant (non-sero) digit signifies the geographic region (“3” signifying Japan) the device is sold in. This leads to a large number of models, all belonging to the same family, but possibly incompatible to some degree, and also makes it difficult to ascertain whether a device is unique or part of an existing family. The software driver filename will often use the family designation.
Some MP devices have fax capability (MP740). R=remote

Unfinished projects and I never finish anyth….

Well, it is not actually true. I do finish some of my personal projects here and there. However this post has been in my drafts for over 2 months!

Mass email marketing – If you do it, put some real effort on it!

by Xavier Comments: 0

I received this today. They didn’t even bother to get the name or names of my applications. This shouts “mass email marketing we don’t care about you, just buy something from us!”

And didn’t Apple Dev Portal just got hacked last Thursday? Did they get my info from there?

Selective pricing in Expedia

by Xavier Comments: 0

For those who check prices in Expedia, make sure you log in from a location that is not too expensive. This is from the same computer, same dates, at the same time but from two different IPs, one in Europe and one in the US. Almost three times more expensive!

Or if you want to vacation and you live in Europe (or UK), look for a local destination or ask a friend from another less expensive location to pay for your hotel!

Windows 8 Folders

by Xavier Comments: 0

Dear Microsoft,

With Windows 8 I believe you tried to get a one size fits all product out too fast. There are things that instead of enhancing user experience, they degrade it.

One example is the Start screen. As you can see there is a bunch of crap that I don’t (nor will ever) use. Please bring in the capability to add folders.

This would have been prevented if you learned from experience. The only thing you needed is one of the people that worked in the design team to be an iPhone user. Remember how the initial versions of iPhone did not have folders and they later added this functionality? Well, just do the same.

How I like to provide feedback – Fitbit vs Microsoft

by Xavier Comments: 0

Have you ever taken one of those surveys that Microsoft presents you from time to time? Who comes up with these surveys?!1?!1?!1?! (one oneado for those who understand!)

If you take a survey from MS it is something like this:

“The following survey consists of 12325 questions that all look the same, it will take you about 3 hours and we are not so sure we will take your response too seriously, we will just average it with the rest. Thanks for all the fish!”

I know that asking a bazillion 1 to 10 questions makes the survey easier to grade and come up with averages and all sorts of charts, complexity all around which makes these people feel important. But it forgets the most important thing, the customer.

When you have a survey, focus on the customer and leave it an open response with perhaps just a few options. Let your customer tell you their experience and either you or hire people to analyze the response and file them accordingly.

I just took Fitbit’s support survey and loved it. Simple, focus on the customer, open answer. Let your customer provide you with the info you need and do the hard work on your end! You will get more of what you need.

fitbit

Also Kudos to Fitbit on their support, it was great and so its their product.

Obtain your locked iPhone’s UUID without iTunes

by Xavier Comments: 0

So I installed iOS 7 in my brother’s iPhone today. I had his iPhone 4 registered properly but I forgot this is a new phone. So now I have:
– A phone that is locked
– I don’t my Mac at hand, only Windows machines
– It is a pretty boring drive at 10 pm and I can’t leave him several days without a phone

Tadaaaaaaaaaa. Get it from the device manager. Just one word of advice, it NEEDS to be typed in developer.apple.com in all lower case. If you write it in upper case it will not be recognized.

It is the last string in Device Instance Path

Install iOS 7 – How to extract the ipsw from dmg file

by Xavier Comments: 0

iOS 7 is out. I need to give it a try, even though some people say you shouldn’t mainly because it is beta as this post from cult of mac says –> http://www.cultofmac.com/231392/why-you-probably-shouldnt-install-ios-7-right-now-opinion/

In any case this guy says you can downgrade: http://www.idownloadblog.com/2013/06/11/how-to-downgrade-ios-7-to-ios-6-1-3/

But let’s cut to the chase. I downloaded the software from developer.apple.com – you need a dev account for that. And so I have the dmg file in desktop. I go to iTunes now and it doesn’t let me select the dmg file. Crap I forgot that #1 the ipsw is inside the dmg file, #2 my Mac Book Pro is at work and #3 I don’t want to wait for tomorrow as I only have Windows on this side of the city.

Solution:

Download Power Iso (http://www.poweriso.com/) and open the dmg file. The dmg file is just like a zip file in logical terms, extract the ipsw and install from iTunes.
dmgtoipsw

Voila! iOS 7 installed and I am ready to suffer bugs, bad battery life and everything that comes with a beta!

Banco Nacional = Usabilidad 0

by Xavier Comments: 0
